Slip-ons are typically low, lace-less shoes. The style most commonly seen, known as a loafer or slippers in American culture, has a moccasin construction. One of the first designs was introduced in London by Wildsmith Shoes, called the Wildsmith Loafer. The concept of the loafer dates back centuries, but the updated design integrated into modern day wardrobe first originated in the early 1900s. Students from North America were traveling to Scandinavia and noticed Norwegian fishermen wearing a comfortable style of the loafer constructed like a moccasin and featuring a slip-on style. The students brought back the idea to the United States where it quickly gained a cult following.
